I had wanted to do this for years and was shocked at how easy it was! And eating the plum preserves gave me great joy!

So... I got notice of this post on my first day in Brazil - coinkydink! My family and I will be in Joacaba for 6 months. If you're going to be in Joacaba between now and April, please give me a shout. I would love to meet you. Also, will do same if we make it up to Curitiba.Donna Lee Schillingerhttp://www.onmyownnow.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8878424530649560742.post-61390068199532853512010-09-30T16:53:03.472-03:002010-09-30T16:53:03.472-03:00As one who is an accidental participant in what is...As one who is an accidental participant in what is the passion of your heart- I appreciate you restraining yourself from the temptation to "preach"

My wife will lead me closer to your vision and my part of repentance will be to attempt to follow her example with less reactivity and more embrace.

"when people like each other the rules change" and I like you Claudio

Wishing we lived in the same neighborhood -

Su Amigo

JaimeJim Hendersonhttp://www.offthemap.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8878424530649560742.post-80705204987279732702010-09-30T13:40:24.706-03:002010-09-30T13:40:24.706-03:00Great Steve

As usual, when listening to your words, I think "Yes, yes, yes!" And then afterwards I think, "But how can I start to do any of this?" I usually feel hopelessly inadequate.

This time, however, I feel hopeful. I think the word Bruce uses is an important one, "incorporate." The activities you talk about, these small acts of domestic production, are just that, small and domestic. They are manageable, they aren't huge logistical projects, so I can just start. I can incorporate one or two or three into my life.

Here's the small example that gives me hope, pizza. On Fridays I could order pizza and have it delivered, or I could go to Safeway and buy a pre made pizza shell and make my own, or I could do what I've started doing, make my own pizza from scratch starting with the dough.

Here's what I've discovered about making my own pizza. It's way cheaper than buying pre-made shells at Safeway. It's way way cheaper than ordering it and having it delivered. And, to top it all off, it doesn't really take that long. A lot of these pre-made, pre-packaged "convenient" things don't really save that much time. The trade off of loss of taste, loss of quality, added packaging, added preservatives, added cost in order to gain a very minimal savings in time usually isn't worth it. We've just become convinced it's so much easier and faster and is just a good, when it really isn't at all.

To Bruce's wondering, I can say the simple act of making my own pizza dough, especially the tactile act of kneading dough, restores me somehow, I'd even call it spiritual. I guess because we aren't spirits in a body, we are embodied beings, so using my body in this generative way is, fundamentally, spiritual.

All that to say my little act of pizza subversion gives me hope, hope that I can incorporate more small generative acts into my life. Who knows, maybe some day I'll reach a tipping point and find myself as radically awesome as Claudio. Some day.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09412900211753790037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8878424530649560742.post-23230258983091056932010-09-30T10:45:05.373-03:002010-09-30T10:45:05.373-03:00i often think about how our modern world has worke...i often think about how our modern world has worked hard to rid ourselves of the messiness of life. very few of us, including myself, when i sit down to eat a hamburger have any clue what went into birthing that cow, raising that cow, ending the cows life and butchering it. and if i eat at a restaurant i even miss out on what it took to prepare that dish and clean up afterwards. Why does this matter? i think we carry that into our emotional, ecological, relational and spiritual lives. we want all of the positive effects of them, but we have been conditioned to avoid the messiness of them. and we use money to do so. I wonder if we were to incorporate these activities back into our physical lives if it would transform us spiritually, emotionally, ecologically and relationally?
BruceBruce Hoplernoreply@blogger.com
